Welcome to the Royal BVI Yacht Club - the National Authority for Sailing in the British Virgin Islands. Simply put the Club is responsible for the growth of sailing in the BVI. It is a commitment we take seriously.
The RBVIYC has a year round water sports program teaching children and adults with many different programs to suit all ages; from the After School Program for 6-18 year olds to adult beginners, intermediate and advanced. We also coach the “Kids and the Seas” (KATS) program. Our weekend adult sailing lessons are expanding and we are adding a Basic Skills program for the HLSCC. Sailing Camps during the school holidays appeal to a wide range of children. Each May RBVIYC sponsors ‘BVI Dinghy Championships’ attracting around 60 boats from all over the Caribbean, making it the second largest regatta in the territory. In November trials are held for the BVI sailing team. These youngsters train 2 or 3 times a week with a goal of competing in regional and international events. (In July 2009 five Team BVI sailors competed in the North American Optimist Championship in the Dominican Republic). The RBVIYC is bidding to host this event in 2011 or 2012 bringing over 200 competitors and 300 coaches/parents/siblings for 9 days of racing in July -- the biggest sporting event ever staged in the BVI. Employing a full time coaching staff, the Club owns a range of dinghies including a fleet of 12 ‘Optimist’ dinghies. The RBVIYC is enjoying record numbers of children taking part in its dinghy sailing activities. The ‘Back to School’ regatta weekend saw 33 youngsters take to the water on Saturday followed by 16 mixed adults and kids on Sunday for the ‘Old School Regatta’. The KATS program is going exceedingly well with 15-20 children every Saturday morning. The ‘Let’s Go Sailing’ program is attracting local High School students. In addition to all this we have the BVI Sailing Team practicing 2 or 3 times a week and Adult Laser sailing enjoying resurgence on Sundays.
For serious racers the club organizes 16 varied regattas around the waters of the BVI. Ranging from the ever popular Virgins Cup to the Anegada Pursuit, Match Racing and the flag ship international weeklong event - the BVI Spring Regatta.
The club is open for lunch on Tuesday-Sunday and dinner Tuesday- Friday. All the income from the Bar and Restaurant goes towards supporting the aims of the club so we look forward to your support. Food and beverage is competitively priced and the staff is working hard to provide great food and ambience—it’s the best view in Town. We continue with our weekly “Taco Tuesday” with $2 tacos, Quiz on Wednesday and Sushi night on Thursdays. Our occasional Friday Oyster nights are a big evening. Special events are usually held on Saturday evenings.
Our aims for the future are two-fold. First we continue to grow a large ‘grassroots’ sailing program set up so that every child in the BVI has the chance to try sailing, understand the basic skills and ultimately enjoy the satisfaction of competitive sailing. Further using the goal of Olympic representation we aim to have role models representing the territory in 2012 and 2016. Alec Anderson, having graduated from the KATS program and the BVI Team placed 7th at the World Youth Championships in Brazil earlier this year and is a real hope to represent the BVI in London/Weymouth 2012. Dontae Hodge is looking at the 2016 and the current optimist youth team are our future hopefuls.
